Hakuen-no-yu is a rock bath averaging 1.25 m deep that you stand up in, fed from the gravel of its own floor - there is nothing else quite like it, and Shiraito-no-yu faces a waterfall from a half-open-air room. The inn keeps a traditional self-catering cure wing alongside the ryokan, so it is set up for staying put, in a wooded river valley reached by bus from Hanamaki.

The baths

Indoor bath

Hakuen-no-yu, the reason people come: a rock bath averaging 1.25 m deep that you stand up in, with the spring rising through the floor of the tub itself. It is mixed bathing, with women-only hours at 6:00-7:00, 11:00-13:00 and 20:00-22:00, and it is closed on Fridays 10:00-14:00 for cleaning.

Shiraito-no-yu is a half-open-air bath facing the Shiraito waterfall; it swaps by gender - women 7:00-10:00 and 15:00-17:00, men 11:00-15:00 and 17:00-6:00.

Private (kashikiri) bath

Gin-no-yu can be booked as a private bath, and day visitors get their own dedicated window of 11:00-15:00 (staying guests 15:00-21:00, six groups, 50 minutes each, first-come). Outside those hours it swaps by gender - women 21:00-6:00, men 6:00-10:00.

Katsura-no-yu is the fourth bath. Shiraito-no-yu, Gin-no-yu and Katsura-no-yu are all cleaned daily 9:30-11:00.

Adults 800 yen, children 600 yen; 1,100 / 900 yen during Golden Week, Obon and the New Year period. Bath plus lunch 1,650 yen, bath plus weekday dinner 4,300 yen. Cleaning starts progressively from 10:00 so some baths may be shut, and day-use reception can be suspended 14:00-17:00 on Saturdays and days before public holidays - phone ahead.

In the Hanamaki hot-spring valley along the Toyosawa river in Iwate, reached by bus from Hanamaki or Shin-Hanamaki Station. The inn keeps a traditional self-catering 'toji' wing alongside the ryokan wing, with a shared kitchen for long stays; toji guests may enter the ryokan wing only to bathe.
