A village-run bath house from 1987 beside the Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine, built almost entirely of local timber. The spring is a sodium bicarbonate water at 26C, so it is heated - on a wood-fired boiler fed with thinnings from the village forests, which you can go and look at from the rest room at the back. No view score is given: the prefecture says there is an open-air bath and the village facility register lists only an indoor one, and we could not settle it.

Every onsen on this site is scored against the same written rubric, and every score has been reviewed by the editor. The ones marked Visited were also bathed in personally.

One indoor bath each for men and women, in a building of Yoshino cedar, cypress, pine and maple - the tub itself is Japanese umbrella-pine and the entrance hall is held up by a maple trunk.

11:00-20:00, last admission 19:30. Closed Tuesdays - the next day instead if the Tuesday is a public holiday - and 29 December to 1 January, with shortened hours on 2 and 3 January.

Getting there
Close to Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine, one of Japan's three great shrines to Benzaiten, in the middle of Tenkawa village. Nara Kotsu buses run from Shimoichiguchi Station on the Kintetsu Yoshino Line towards Nakaanju and Dorogawa Onsen and serve the village, but only a handful a day - check the timetable on the village website before you plan around it.
