The same naturally welling Takayu sulphur water, gravity-fed and neither heated nor diluted, but in a well-kept inn with garden open-air baths and the thatched Tamago-yu hut it is named after. All the baths are gender-separated with no mixed bathing, a free shuttle runs from Fukushima Station for the day-use session, and the private open-air bath is what the inn offers tattooed visitors.

The baths

Indoor bath

Taki-no-yu on the 4th floor and Senki-no-yu on the 1st floor are the two indoor baths and the only ones with shampoo and body soap provided. The inn states its baths are gender-separated and that it has no mixed bathing.

Open-air bath

Tenkei-no-yu and Tensho-no-yu are open-air baths that swap between men and women every other day. The thatched Tamago-yu bath hut on the grounds is the inn's namesake.

The private open-air bath 'Seoto' is offered for an extra charge, and the inn points tattooed visitors to it as their alternative.

Towels 300 yen to buy, bath towels 500 yen to rent, or bring your own. A tatami private room for the daytime session is 5,500 yen per room (up to 5 people), phone booking from a week ahead.

Getting there
In Takayu Onsen in the mountains west of Fukushima city, on the route to the Bandai-Azuma Skyline. A free shuttle runs for the daytime day-use session, leaving the Fukushima Station west exit bus stop at 10:40 and the inn at 13:15, taking about 30 minutes - longer in winter. Takayu water is naturally welling, milky white acidic sulphur, delivered by gravity with no heating or dilution.
