A small inn that has been on this spot for over three hundred years, piping Yubatake water directly with no blending and leaving the baths open all night. The bathhouse itself - cypress, exposed beams, a steam lattice - is the character here rather than any view, and it is very much in the middle of the town. No day visitors.

The baths

Indoor bath

Water is piped straight from the Yubatake source with nothing added, and the baths are open around the clock to staying guests. The men's bath is a large indoor tub plus an open-air one; the women's bath is two tubs of different sizes and temperatures. The bathhouse is cypress-built with a lattice steam vent and heavy round beams. The water is normally green-tinged and clear, and only turns milky after heavy rain or when mineral flowers are being harvested at the Yubatake.

In the village centre just below the Yubatake. From Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station on the JR Agatsuma Line take the JR bus about 25 minutes to Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal and walk. Check-in from 13:00, check-out by 10:00.
